Chapter 9

PHILLIP APPROACHED ME, HIS face tight as though he were ready to explode. “Your friend has been busy.” He growled and handed me the paper nearly crushed in his fist.

I blinked and opened the paper. The words leapt out at me like a sucker punch to the gut. I shook my head. Logan wouldn’t have done this. He didn’t have time to change the rules. But it was his name on the paper, asking for the fight to be rescheduled to tomorrow because he was back to full strength. And the stamp stating GRANTED across the paper nearly made me choke.

“This has to be a mistake.” All his confessions today rubbed my skin wrong as I stared at his signature. Tears burned my eyes and my chest squeezed as if someone dropped a car on it. I dropped the paper and headed for the sliders. If I stayed here, I’d set the house on fire.

“Erica,” William said and started after me.

“Stay,” I hissed and shifted as I sprinted out the door. With each stride, the moments we shared pummeled me. My fire licked the ground as I ran, and I pulled it in. All I needed was to start a fire that would burn the town I was compelled to protect.

I let out an aggravated growl. I wanted to just scream and let my fire go. The only place I’d be safe doing that was down in the lake on the other side of the park. It was outside of pack lands, but I knew if I swam out far enough, I could let this frustration go.

I used to go to the lake with friends in high school. We broke into the park more times than I could count, and those memories helped soothe the anger pulsing in my veins. With the wind at my back and the lake in my sights, I sprinted down the path that led to the beach. When I neared the place where the forest met the sand, pain bit into my back leg and my run was cut short with a yelp.

I slammed to the ground, unable to move forward. A howl of pain escaped, and I turned, staring at the bear trap that had my hindleg in its painful grip. A mangy wolf stepped out from behind the bushes separating the path from the beach, with his teeth bared. I tried to yank my leg free, but I couldn’t. I concentrated on my fire, but it wouldn’t come forth. It was stuck within the confines of my skin, and panic flooded my furry form.

The wolf’s eyes narrowed, and it charged at me with a snarl promising pain. As it leapt in the air for the kill, something darted through the air like a shot of lightning, all teeth and fury as a new wolf caught the one coming for me by the throat.

Before they landed, I heard the snap of a neck and the wolf bent on attacking me went limp. But the one who saved me kept shaking the dead thing as if his fury couldn’t be contained.
